Electronic Devices

During a meeting Monday night that took place a week earlier than usual because of a ball game conflict, Dexter school board members voted to put into place a usage policy that applies to all Dexter students on all four campuses of all digital devices including, cell phones, pagers, ipods, digital cameras and mp3 players. The newly-drafted policy stresses that the school district "recognizes the need for parents to be able to communicate with their children in a timely manner, and developments in cell phone technology in recent years have resulted in enhanced communication opportunities. However, the use of cell phones, pagers, digital cameras, MP3s, iPods, and similar devices in schools poses increasing risks of school disruptions, bullying criminal activity and academic dishonesty." Student may have the devices on their person, but their use will be prohibited during and between critical learning times. The devices may be used during lunch and before and after the schoolday.
